Business Leaders, philanthropist

Each person in their life time wants to leave a legacy. Something that many can look back and say, “That was a life well spent, a life of giving, a life in the service of others.”. As time passes many trials and tribulations come our way and it is those experiences that help us grow into people of character. A person who can easily see the other side of the fence. Dick Devos is such a man and his charitable giving is rivaled by none.

Dick Devos is the son of Rich Devos a man who built an empire empowering other people with the philosophy that “If you can imagine it, then you can do it!”. Rich Devos helped build many a millionaire and his son Dick was placed on that same road. After many years of hard work Dick Devos became the man his father wanted him to be. A philanthropist that never once forgot his roots, who he was, and who he must always be. The years Dick spent working for Amway corporation here as well as abroad made him a more well-rounded businessman. After many years with Amway to include the restructuring of the corporation Dick Devos began the Windquest corporation followed by becoming the manager of the Orlando Magic, an NBA basketball team.

Ultimately, in 2006 Dick Devos still working with Amway and Windquest decided to run for Governor of Michigan. Spending almost 40 million dollars of his own money he came up a bit short and was defeated. The Devos family is not used to defeat and so Dick Devos turned his efforts to the nurturing of children. What could be better?

In a very special way it is the educational system that has attracted Dick Devos and his lovely wife Betsy and they have brought to bear their substantial fortune to this venue. Starting with a very small Potters House Christian Academy Dick Devos began a crusade to fund scholarships for the poorer families and to give them an opportunity to choose the educational system best suited for their children. With school age children of his own it became a quest to make sure that every child had the same type of educational opportunities his children had. Of the 139 million dollars in donations almost 35 million of that went to schools and educational funding. In addition, a little over 20 million went to Health and Human services and another 20 million went to The Arts.

As diverse as their generosity is, it is the way they give that should be noted. They have a ‘No interference, No questions asked’ philosophy, that allows the recipients of Dick Devos’ generosity to put the money to the use that they deem most beneficial.

Dick Devos and his family have been a solid main stay for the state of Michigan each year. Always ready to put their best foot forward. His wife Betsy is now the Secretary of Education in the Trump Administration and Dick is very supportive of her role in government. The Devos custom has always been to live by the Golden Rule and Dick Devos exemplifies that tradition each day.

philanthropist

According to Kennedy Centre press release, John F. Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts has gone beyond it fundraising goals. The project upped its target of the planned expansion by another $50 million. The campaign is targeting $135.9 million that will be used to expand the centre and include riverfront pavilion, a pedestrian bridge that will link the Kennedy Centre and the Pavilion. Moreover, the project is targeting to include three new pavilions, offices, dining space, and education and rehearsal space.

The Kennedy Centre was established in 1971 and see about 3 million visitors each year. Most of the visitors are children who attend the facility as part of c community outreach and educational programs. Centre leaders have expressed the vision of delivering expanded facility by 2018.

The campaign of expanding the Kennedy centre for performing art started back in 2013 with a target of raising $125bmillion for expansion and $25 million for programming initiatives. However, due to strict scrutiny by federal planning agencies, the designed has changed, and the cost of construction has risen. The fact that the project of this magnitude is fully funded by contributed donations reflects a passion for arts in our community and country at large.

Earlier, at the Centre’s board meeting, Dick Devos a Michigan philanthropist along with his wife Betsy Devos announced that they would give the centre $22.5 million to continue with its noble purpose of training arts.

Dick Devos is the son of Richard DeVos, Amway founder. This was not the first time for Dick Devos to donate astronomical contributions to the Kennedy Centre. Often, the family has donated millions of dollars to Dick and Betsy Devos Foundation. The charity was founded by Dick and his wife Betsy Devos as a vehicle of giving back to the community in response to financial blessing they have received over the years.

The foundation is well known in Grand Rapids for its support of a broad range of community initiatives. However, it seems Dick and Betsy has a soft spot for education. Through the foundation, they have supported and donated heavily on various education initiatives such Rehoboth Christian School, Princeton University, Davenport University Education Freedom Fund, and the West Michigan Aviation Academy, which was the first chartered high school with a focus on aeronautical.

Sometimes the arts are easily overlooked in a discussion of education developments, but I am thrilled to see passionate people such as Devos family take a keen interest in Kennedy Centre for Performing Arts. It is nice to see there are Americans who cares deeply about the role of arts in our society.

Business World, Investing, philanthropist

The recent death of Stephen Murray has shook a lot of people to their core. This is someone that was highly respected, loved, and valued in his line of work. His occupation was that a private equity investor and philanthropist. He knew how to invest, when to invest, and the proper steps to take.

That is why he was so successful for so many years and why his death is such a tragedy. However, he may be gone, but as they say, he is certainly not forgotten. His legacy and what he accomplished will live on forever. The positive impact he made will not go unnoticed, unappreciated, or undervalued.

I mentioned that he was a philanthropist. So many people give back because it looks good or it makes them feel good as sort of a pat on the back. That was most certainly not the case with Stephen Murray. He gave back because he knew in his heart of hearts that it was the right thing to do.  Read more: Stephen Murray, The Great Investor and Deal Maker for CCMP Capital

He always did right by his investors and he always did right when it came to giving back. He knew that with great wealth came great responsibility. He was not a materialistic man looking to buy fancy things. It was just the opposite. He was looking for ways to help out others and make their lives a little easier.

In my view, that is the true measure of a man and that is why I say there is only one Stephen Murray. We don’t want to admit it, but we would be lying to ourselves if we didn’t face facts: we live in a cynical world these days. Read more: Ex-CCMP Capital CEO Steve Murray passes away

Stephen Murray had a kind heart, was generous, and an incredibly smart man. What he accomplished as the the former President and chief executive officer of CCMP Capital was second to none. He has left the company in good hands for the present and for the future.

While he is gone, he would not want us to mourn his death or sit around being sad. He would want us to remember his vision and his goals and carry on his legacy. That is one thing you can never take away from a man along with his reputation. That will forever stay with the people that were lucky enough to know him, work with him, and even get to call him a friend. Again, there was only one Stephen Murray.
